A CHURCH ROBBED
Some time on "Wednesday night the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption at Onehunga was broken into and two sacred vessels, valued at £30, were stolen, states the "New Zealand Herald.'' The robbery was discovered early on Thursday morning by Monsignor J. Cahill, who Tesides in the presbytery immediately behind the church. He found that the back door of the church had been forced open, and further investigation disclosed that the lock of an inner door leading to the Sacristy had been forced. In the Sacristy itself, the lock of a press where the church vestments are stored, was also broken, but the contents were not interfered with. There were five chalices in the room, three of silver and two gilded. The two latter are missing,.the thief obviously having mistaken them for solid gold. Monsignor Cahill states that he locked the church doors at o 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, but that at 8 o'clock, the attention of two Sisters, on entering the church from the convent across the street, was attracted by a suspicwus-lookiiig m an ] can j ng TIZ ,ai^. lectric light pole in front of the building. -On their emerging from the church some minutes afterwards they noticed the man still there A description of him has been given to the police, who have the case in hand
