OBITUARY

MR. C. CARWELL-COOKE

The death occurred at his home in TVadestow.ll yesterday, of Mr. George Carwcll-Copke at tho "age of 73. He had been ailing for some time. The late Mr.. Carwell-Cooke was born in Astley Guise, Bedfordshire, and began his career in the- printing trade. At the age of' 26 he went to Melbourne, v.-here he was engaged in journalism. In 1893 he came to New Zealand, working with the "Evening, Press," and later with the United Insurance Company. In 1907 he joined-the Friendly Societies Department, and in the following year he was transferred to the Audit Department, with which he remained until he retired in 1927. For about seven years prior to his letjretnient he was supervisor of local.bodies' audit. . ' •

A man of very wide reading and fln» literary tastes, the late Mr. CarwellCooke spent some of his leisure in the •writing of rersc. For some years he was the editor of an accountant's paper entitled Accountancy, Commercial and Insurance." In 1919 ho published a small booklet, "Odd Bhymes," Music also claimed his attention, and ho was -a member of the men's Liedertafel and of St. Paul's choir. His keen love of Nature was shown in his extensive garden at Wadestown. He was instrujnontal in getting the City Council to abolish differential treatment in connection with the Wadestown tramway fares. His strong advocacy of the claim that Wadestown had to be ranked ■with other suburbs in Wellington resulted in the fares for the tram service to that district being placed on a par with those in other parts of Wellington. For his work in this connection he received a valuable presentation from Wadestown residents. In 1887 he married Miss Marian Elizabeth Blaxell, who survives; him. Ho also leaves three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Johns, of Los Angeles, Miss Eona Carwell-Cooke, of the Health Department, Napier, and Miss Nesta CarwellCooke, of Wellington, and two sons, Mr. Courtney Carwell-Cooko, of the Wellington City Council, and Mr. Norman Carwell-Cooke, of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington,
