AUSTRALIAN LEGISLATION

The . Australian "ttinistcr of Commerce, Mr. 1\ H. Stewart, announced in the House of Representatives recently'that legislation to stabilise butter marketing will bo introduced into the- House of Bcprescntatives.

He said that tho Commonwealth legislation; would ratify- Acts passed by the States, nnd would bo on the lines of the- existing dried-fruits-legislation.1 Tho' Government did-'not propose to wait until all tho States had passed their butter legislation, but tho Federal measure would not be proclaimed until discussions had taken place with tho States and with representatives of the dairying industry.

The Butter Bill, Mr. Stewart said, would prohibit any butter manufacturer from, inter-State unless ho had sent'overseas a prescribed quota of his output. Every person in the industry would have to accept a share of tho less attractive foreign market while sharing tho protected home market. The plan would jiot necessarily involve .additional cost to local butter' consumers.
