GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE
CLUBS MUST HAVE REBATE
Tlio Minister of Finance (the Jit.' Hon. J. G. Coates) left no doubts in the minds of members of the House of Representatives this morning as to tho Government's determination t'o'grant a rebate of 10 per cent, in totalisntor tax to racing clubs during the next financial year. Authority for this is contained in the Finance Bill" now before the House. .'. ~ . . . Mr. l'\ Langstone; (Labour, .Waiiua*1 l-iuu) asked iti thu Government intended I Ito put the clause /through. The Minister: AVould you prefer that i tins clause should stay out? Mr. Langst.one: Yes,- it-is giving away public moneys.. ■ The Minister (emphatically): Well, it is not going to stay out. lam going to see that it stays in, and this House is going to sco that it stays in. ■ Mr. A. J. Stallworthy (Independent, Eden): How can tho Minister say tho House is going to keep it in? ' Tho Minister: I am-going to say that the House will keep it in and will support it. Mr. W. J. Broadfoot (Government, Waitonio): It will bring more money into the State eventually. Mr. Langstone: Your racing club couldn't at any rate. Discussing the clause, the Leador of the Opposition (Mr. M. J. Savage) said that rabbit board subsidies wove to be decreased and racing clubs were to receive a benefit of a rebate of 10 per cent. That money, would represent what had been taken away from tho rabbit boards and old-age pensions. He said that as a sportsman ho would not ask for this concession under present circumstances.
