PIPE BANDS

MEETING OF CENTRE

PROPOSED CONTEST

The annual meeting of the Welling-ton-Hawke's Bay Centre of : tha'Highland Pipe Bands' Association of New Zealand was held on. Saturday evening, Mr. ¥. G. Bcddiug (Scots College) presided. • ■ The annual report stated that the past year had been a very quiet one for the centre. For various reasons no coutests had been held among the.bands in the .centre. As it was intended to hold a brass baud contest in' Wellington during the coming year, tho possibility of a Dominion or centre pipe baud contest at the samo time might be considered. During the year further efforts had been made to organise tho bands in tlio centre. The Huntervillo Pipe Band had become affiliated, and thers were prospects of the Nelson Pipe Band also affiliating. The affiliated bauds now comprise tho Wellington, Scots College, Wairarapa, Masterton, Peilding, and Hunterville ■ Pipe Bands. The financial position of the centre was satisfactory, the receipts for the year being £4 2s 6d and the expenditure &1 18s 6d. Officers fpr the ensuing year.were elected as follows:—President, Mr. E. H. Pike (Feilding); vice-presidents, Messrs, F. G. Bedding (Scots College) and W. Bin-ell (Wairarapa Highland Pipe Band); secretary-treasurer, Mr. M. Gray Nasmith (Wellington); executive,' Messrs. W. Fraser (Wellington), lan Cameron (Masterton), !J.B. Johns (Wairarapa Pipo Band), and the officers ex offieio. The Nelson Pipe Band intimated its intention to join the centre, arid it was resolved that the boundaries ■of the centre should*be enlarged *to take in Nelson and .Marlborough. The question of a'Dominion contest was raised in a letter from, the Pipe Bands Association, of New Zealand,; intimating that' so far no application had beca made to hold a Dominion pipe band contest this year. ~'... The secretary expressed the opinion that the time was inopportuno -.to hold a contest in Wellington. Tho last contest at Dunedin showed that only, tjie bands near by were able to compete and the same thing would happen were a contest to be held in Wellington, fle agreed that time could be found in which to make arrangements, but thought that the centre would meet with failure, Mr. \V. Eraser expressed & similar opinion. Where was the money, for prizes to come from? he asked. He could not see the centre raising £100 for prizes at the present time. He considered it inadvisable for the centre i;o make application, for a permit, for a Dominion contest at the present time. Other delegates spoke in similar strain, and it was agreed to take no action in th& matter. ' The question of a centre contest was also discussed, but after it "had been pointed out by several speakers that the bands in tho centre were not in a position to travel owing to shortage' of funds, it was resolved to let the.matter stand over. It was resolved to. recommend to the Pipe Bands' Association that the officers of the association bo nominated only by pipe band centres, and not by individual persona or^ bands, and that the vice-president for the North Island be nominated by a centre in that island and tho South Island vice-president by a centre in tho South Island. A vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing officers for their work during the past year. -.. . • ,
