POSITION IN AUSTRALIA
A vivid illustration of the continued, amazing growth of imports of all kinds of Japanese goods into Australia is contained in detailed figures made available by the Commonwealth Statistician : (Mi-. MePhee)' for the September quarter, says the •'Melbourne Age." Compared with the corresponding period of 1932, the increase stands at approxi-mately-50 per cont. 'The most disturbing factor associated with the importations is that in a number of instances they comprise 'classes of goods are manufactured.locally. This provides an answer to repeated statements in official quarters ithat the growth in importations is confined to lines which are not produced in Australia. During the quarter textiles headed the list with, £743,833, an increase of £75,079 over., the .September quarter pi- 1932. Apparel and attire jumped by approxi-, mately £,11,000;' jewellery, fancy goods, etc., by £34,000, or more than 100 per cent.; earthenware, china, glassware, etc., by-£28,000, and items classified as miscellaneous by £.11,000. Japan were unfriendly. "It is hoped," added the Minister, "to further cement the existing friendly relations by the formulation of a, trade treaty, -which. ■will be satisfactory to both countries."
