CLERK'S LAPSE
EMPLOYERS ROBBED
Having pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to a charge of stealing £60 -8s 3d from his. employers, Fashions, Ltd., Gillies Francis Nicole, a clerk, aged 24, appeared for sentence before Mr, Justice MacGregor at the Supreme Court today.
Counsel for the prisoner, Mr. Dunn, said that before Nicole; obtained the employment in which he was at the time .the offence was cc*nmitte<i, he had been out of woTk.for a considerable period, and he had contracted debts. Ho found that he was unable to pay, them off when he obtained employment, and turned to gambling, and of course lost more. When he found the position was hopeless he frankly explained the position. . ; 1 ■.;
In imposing a term of nine months' imprisonment, his Honour said that the prisoner had admitted stealing a number of small sums from his employers, amounting altogether'to, between £60 anil .£.7o^ "Ho had a position of trust and he abused that trust—a class of offence that is becoming altogether too common,'' he added.
