ENGLAND THE WINNERS
MATCH PLAYED IN FOG
LONDON, December 16. .. England defeated Australia at League football at Swintonby 19 points to 16, after leading by 12 points to 9 at halftime. The match. Was as keenly fought as the previous Tests. At the conclusion of the lhatch, Sir Edward Stockton presented the cup to Sullivan, the captain of the' English team. The match was played in a fog which affected the attendance, which was only 8000. The visibility was just enough for play, and spectators' across the ground were invisible., England were penalised in the first minute, Brown missing the kick. The Australians pressed, but the tackling was deadly on both sides, till at the end of twelve minutes' play Hey broke through and scored a try for Australia. Brown converted. Three 'minutes later Sullivan reduced the arrears with a penalty kick. Hudson then scored a try which was converted by Sullivan. Fcetha'm added an unconverted try and Sullivan a penalty goal for England, while Brown kicked a couple of penalties for Australia, making the half-time score England 12, Australia 9. ' | Australia pushed. ahead en the resumption, Prigg getting a goal from an attack. Brown also kicked a goal. Numerous infringements cost Australia the lead. The fog became worse. Brown kicked another penalty, but Sullivan already had added one. Hey almost scored when Australia were attacking heavily, but Smith secured a try at the corner and Sullivan made victory certain with a penalty from the touchline. Sullivan contributed largely to England's success, though Brown ran him close for the honours .of the match.
