Kilbirnie went close to scoring ah outright wiu aguinst Institute on the Kil-, birnie Reserve. They had declared at the tea adjournment with six wickets down for 341 iv reply to Institute's first innings score of 153., Institute again failed to impress and wickets fell rapidly. The ninth wicket, was taken off the first ball of the last oyer of the day, but Henderson succeeded in playing out time ami saved his side from complete defeat. There were two fine displays in the Kilbirnie inuings, Crook making 111 and Ward, 77. -Both men batted excellently, and the second wicket partnership realised 140 runs in 76 minutes. On the previous Saturday oue wicket had been-lost for 101 runs, and /when . play was resumed rdnscame at. a dazzling pace. Smurtly-ruu singles .and fine placements to the boundary kept interest at a high pitch. Ward was eventually clean bowled, his score including eight 4's. With Bilby at the other end, Crook raised, his century with a cut through slips and followed it immediately with a 6 to leg. At 111, however^ he skied a ball from McLean and was given out for obstructing the field. He hit eleven 4's. With the exception of Morris and Hepburn, the remaining Kilbirnie batsmen tackled the bowling in fine style, and 300 was raised in 175 minutes. The partnership between Wilson and Doneghue produced runs at a very fast clip, and at the tea adjournment when a declaration was made, the score was 341 with these two men still together. Institute began slowly, but somewhat better than in .their first innings. Prince was bowled at 51, and then three wickets fell in quick succession, Duffy, Brooks, and McLean, all being dismissed. Tucker and Haukius were together and their bat- . ting saved Institute from outright loss. Hankins played a forceful innings although he did not get much assistance once Tucker had gone. 'Heard,'I'however, stuck to his guns, and at 6.18, when Haukins was clean bowled; three wickets had to fall iv seven minutes to give Kilbirnie an eight-point win.' Two balls later Aldridge was stumped, and then iv the last Over of the day, from Ashenden, Reid was given .out, Henderson blocked the . remaining five balls.
