MIDLAND AND PETONE

Midland failed to catch up on the big score made by Petone in the first day's play in the match on the Petone Recreation Groupd. Petone made 320, and when stumps were drawn Midland had lost one wicket for fourteen runs (Dustin, bowled Rotherham 0). With the exception of the consistent Tindill, who made 73, and Clark, who compiled a bright 43, Baker, and Lawton were the only other Midland batsmen to reach double figures, the whole side being out at 5 p.m. for 173 runs. Petone batted again, and Mallard and O'Leary put ou 117 runs before being sep-arated-shortly before 6.30 p.m. The side made 125 runs for one wicket.

Tindill and baker resumed Midland's innjngs. and advanced the score to 21. when Baker made a weak stroke to leg, enabling H. E. Nicholls to take a fine one-handed catch. Jack was bowled by Allcott. Cleverley was caught and bowled by Allcott, and then Rotherham skittled O'Neill's stumps. Tindill meanwhile was shaping well; making several boundary shots,- and the bowling, although it kept him fairly quiet, was unable to shift him. Clark did not take long to get going, and although- he did not make many boundary shots, bis score mounted up with 2's and singles. The partnership was an effective one, and then Mallard bowled Clark. Bryant was the incomer, and when the tea adjournment was taken the score was 130 for six wickets (Tindill 66). Tindill did not last long when play was resumed, falling lbw to Brice. In his score of 73 there were seven 4's. Bryant went soon afterwards, and neither- Cutts nor Harrison stayed long at the crease.'' Lawton shaped soundly for his 21 not out, and looked as if he would have taken some shifting. Allcott did most of the bowling, sending down twenty-five overs, four of which- were maidens, for-64 runs and four wickets. The

other bowlera did well in getting the other wickets, O'Leary and Mallard batted well in Petonc's second innings, and delie.l the changes of bowling. O'Leary compiled si, his score, including seven. 4's. Twelvii 4'i_ wero included in Mallard's score of GS, not out. Details:— MIDLAND. First Innings.
