COMPENSATION CLAIMS
Special provision is made in tho Finance Bill, read a first time in the House on Saturday night, for the compensation of land damaged as the result of the stoppage of construction of Government railways.
Under existing legislation no new lines can be constructed or work on suspended undertakings resumed without the resolved authority of Parliament, and the Bill now before the House stipulates that where no proclamation has been issued for the taking of the land affected, persons interested in areas damaged or injuriously affected,; by construction may claim compensation under the Public AVorks Act, provided the application is lodged within a-year of the passing of the new legislation. If construction is proceeded with subsequently, and the land concerned is taken, payment of compensation now prpvided for will be taken into account in assessing future reimbursements.
