HABBOUR LEGISLATION
CONTROL OF REFUSE
The Harbours Amendment Bill was put through all stages and passed by the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon.
During the second reading debate, the Hon. M. Fagan expressed regret that the clause in the Bill giving boards the right to control the depositing of refuse and ballast in harbours has been dropped in the House of Representatives. The English harbour authorities had had that authority for over one hundred years. He understood that tho clause had been dropped as the result of representations made on behalf of the Wellington City Council, and expressed the hope that the Government would not allow the question to drop.
The Minister of Education (the Hon. R. Masters) replied that the Minister of Marine intended to bring down legislation next session to meet the question.
