NIGHT TRAIN SERVICE
WELLINGTON-TARANAKI
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") ' NEW PLYMOUTH, December 15. Railway matters, including the question of a night train between New Plymouth and Wellington, were discussed by the council of the Taranald Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., forwarded a letter from Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways. This announced the decision of the board not to approve the proposal for a night train from New Plymouth to Wellington via Taumarunui. The board thought the most natural night service between the two centres was by the direct route, and as soon as the financial position improved the board had in mind the restoration of the service commenced in March, 1930, but discontinued owing to limitations of finance. At the suggestion of Mr. G. H. Dolby it was decided to keep in touch with the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, which had suggested a service on two nights a week. '... . ' ■■ Messrs. Ross and Glendining wrote expressing : concern at the disadvantage Wei-, lington and'Taranaki firms labour under regarding reasonable transport facilities between the two ps^vinces. ' It was decided to inform Messrs. Ross' and .Glendining that the matter had been' discussed with the chairman of the Railways Board and that the chamber had de-1 cided.it would 'riot 'be'in the best interests 'to.support'a 'Taumarunui night connection to Wellington; the chamber, however, was in accord with the suggestion to restart a nig-ht service on the direct route on a limited number of nights a week, this plan having been discussed' with-Mr. Sterling, and concerning'which the chamber would co-operate with the Wellington chamber in> appropriate' action.
