MERCANTILE LEAGUE

The.series of matches in the Welling" ton Mercantile League competitions set down for today coniplcto activities for the first half of the season. There will" be 110 club matches next Saturday and none on December 30. The first round of the competitions from A to D grade will bo completed with the series set down for January 6. Next Saturday the league intends staging a match between the representative team selected to go to Auckland and tho team to play the Hutt Valloy Cricket Association. This match should, serve the useful purpose of bringing the players together prior to participation in their more important engagements. Mi1, E. Casey, a selector and a member of the management committee has been appointed manager of the team to play against Hutt Valley at Kelburn Park on December 26 and 27. There was some tall scoring in last Saturday's series of matches, and bowlers also had a fair measure of success. State Advances, who are being forecast as the most likely B grade champion side, ran up 341 runs against Bing Harris. E. McCardell, a forceful batsman who has been to the fore previously, scored a brilliant century. McCardell is a hard-driving batsman and a useful change bowler, and should come into consideration for later representative teams. Ho and Steven (79), put on 157 for the sixth wicket. Each batsman's score included six 6's. Playing for Whitcombes O'Sullivan scored 162, the second highest individual tally for this season. Whitcombes unfortunately, are an in-and-out team, and their performances have been very inconsistent. Morris, of Bookers-Bricks, scored his second century in succession with a fine innings of 112. Other players to score centuries were Noat (James Smiths) 103, C. Wynne (Health-Public Trust) 107 not out, Glen Riddell (Justice Department) ing) 106, and Millgate (Ross and Glendining) 103 and Mclver (Combined Insurance) 111. Gunson, of Customs B, was well to the fore in the bowling department with eight wickets for 11 runs, while Hoffmeister (Labour A) seven for 67, Pickering (Bookers) six for 62, Mouat (Pensions) six for 39, Reynolds (TaylorPhoenix) six for 27, and Millgate (Ross and Glendining) six for 46 also bowled well. The first century scored in Wanganui cricket this season was registered by G. Thakoinbau (a cousin of the Fijian player of that name who represented Auckland) of the Technical College eleven against Marist last Saturday. He scored 111 runs, and his partnership with J. Metekingi produced 167 runs for the second wicket.
