GOOD AUGURY FOR NEW YEAR

The weekly wool letter in the "Sydney Morning Herald" says the closing of the wool auctions was marked by keenness of competition 'arid 'firmness of values, which niigur well for the New Year sales. Particularly'brisk inquiry was noticeable for specialty .merino wools free and outstanding for fineness, record Australian figures being secured for these. However; ■ extreme prices for specialty lines should not be taken as a guide to general values. The.average, for. the market is less than half .the top. figure, namely 37V£d, which was secured this week. Prospects for a sustained market during the second" half of the season have rarely been more favourable. The'wbekV offerings totalled 50,884 bales, of which' 95 per cent, were sold at auction. The 'week's' •catalogues averaged in the vicinity of- 16 %d- m\ a- clean scoured basis on the floor in Sydney stores. Average 64's .topmnking wool,- which cost 30d at the opening of the sales •in September, made 34d at the closing of the auctions this week.
