THE BISHOP-ELECT

A NOTABEL CAREER

(Special to the "Evening Post.") , NELSON, December 15. The Rev. Canon William George Hilliard, M.A., of Sydney, at present headmaster of Trinity Grammar School, Dulwieh, Sj'dnQy, has been selected as the new Bishop of Nelson in succession to Bishop Sadlier. The, Bishop-elect, before ordination, was a State school teacher. He was ordained in 1911 after completing his University course, and became curate at Holy Trinity, Dulwich Hill, the present Bishop of Tanganyika (East Africa) being the then vicar. Mr. Hilliard, as lie then was, was appointed headmaster of Trinity Grammar School in its early beginnings. He was also appointed missionei l to the men's industrial mission zone, Sydney, and lecturer at the Moore rtlheological College, Sydney, and in 1916 became rector of St. John's, Ashfield. Here he remained for ten years, doing splendid parish work. He is considered one of the best preachers in the Sydney diocese. He was rector of St. Clement's, Marrickville, from 19?6 to 1929, in the latter year succeeding Dr. Weeks, formerly Dean of Nelson, as headmaster once more of Trinity Grammar School, which by this time had grown to be a, big public school, and he has been there ever since. The Bishop-elect is considered to be one of the outstanding- younger men of the diocese of Sydney. He was nominated for the Archbishopric, of Sydney, and at present his name is also being mentioned for another vacant Australian bishopric. He is described as a convinced evangelical of broad and tolerant sympathy. Commendations of his work and ability were received from two Australian bishops and other leading Australian clergy and laity, and all expressed the opinion that if the diocese of Nelson secured him. as the successor to Bishop Sadlier it would be a very fine choice. The Bishop-elect is 46 years of age, and has several children. His experience in parish work, as headmaster of a big sclioql, as a missioner in industrial parishes, and in his. capacity as lecturer and in the training of men for the ministry, should help considerably in facing the problems and needs of the diocese. No information has yet been received whether Canon Hilliard would accept the office. ,
