EFFECTS OF DRY SPELL
Due to absence of rain over the past three weeks there have been many grass 'and. other iires in the Wanganui district, and many large tracts of manuka, fern, and other growths have been-burnt in the National Park area, states the "Wanganui Herald." One areaiof 500 acres in extent' has been burnt, while several '.small areas of larch trees have been destroyed. During, the past few weeks, fires have spread through large tracts-of country between the Chateau turn-off and Lake Boto-aira. In . the Wanganui and Taupo districts the streams are very low and Lake Taupo is lower than it has been for some time. Anglers report that they have not previously seen Tongariro River so low at this time of the year. -. ■
