WELLESLEY COLLEGE

SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Students of Wellesley College and their parents and friends filled the Masonic Hall last night, when the prizes won during the year in the classroom and on the sports field were distributed. The' chair-man-of the Parents' Association (Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell) presided, and the presentation of the pi-izes was made by Canon Percival James, M.A. Prior to the prize-giving there was a short entertainment. A. A. Milne's farce "The Man in the Bowler Hat" was very ably acted by H. K. Palmer, F. 11. Bray, Cardale, B. S. Devine, B. Didsbury, M. J. Miles, and H. Bauchop. The play was produced by .Miss Elizabeth Blake.' Following it were three much-appreciated songs given by some of the boys of the lower school. A bouquet was presented to Mrs. James by David Buckleton and another to Mrs. W. H. Stevens by Nigel Sievwright. ' Mr. Treadwell'said that the unquestionable progress that the school was making, even in these times of depression, was due to the fact that the school was run on sound economic and educational lines. The roll number was actually increasing, and already parents were inquiring about enrolments for next year. Mr. Treadwell paid a tiibute to the extraordinarily capable work, of the principal (Mr. W: H. Stevens, M.A.) . and his staff, and' said that no one could offer adverse criticism of anything they had done. All but one boy in Standard 6 obtained proficiency certificates, and that boy did not fail but won'a competency. For the experience, the class below attempted to qualify for proficiency, and three were successful while three obtained the competency. Fourteen had sat for matriculation. During the year the college had had the inestimable advantage of the close co-opera-tion of Ganon James in guiding the spiritual welfare of the boys, and the Teachers and Parents' Association appreciated deeply his active interest. In a short informal speech the1 principal, Mr. Stevens, said that he hoped next year to be able to make some changes in the school as the result _ of which he trusted there would be a eonsidable improvement. Canon James presented the prizes and addressed the gathering. His remarks are reported under a separate heading. Cheers by the boys for Canon and Mrs. James, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, and Mr and Mrs. Treadwell, and the singing of the National Anthem concluded the function.
