THE WRONG FINGER
AMPUTATION ERROR
DAMAGES MAY BE CLAIMED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHEISTCHURCH, December 14.. A mistake on the part of the operating surgeon resulted in a patient at the public hospital having the wrong finger amputated during a recent operation, and it is likely that the North Canterbury Hospital Board will be faced with, a claim. for damages. The patient was a joinery worker who was admitted to hospital several weeks ago after an accident at a Sydenham factory. He had already lost the little finger of his right hand, and on this occasion he badly injured the finger next to it. Attempts to heal the injury having failed, it was decided to amputate the finger. • The surgeon, a young but fully qualified practitioner on the staff of the hospital, took charge of the operation. Instead Of the third finger he removed the middle finger. The case will probably be settled out of Court. It is understood that the hospital committee of the board has alroady made an inquiry into, the case.
