THREE RARE FISHES
MUSEUM ACQUISITIONS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) • AUCKLAND, December 14. Acquisitions of world-wide scientific significance in the realm of fish fauna have been made by the Auckland; War Memorial Museum, as the result of recent discoveries in New Zealand waters of three fish sent to the museum by finders, a raft fish, a unicorn ribbon fish, and a long-finned albacore. The raft fish has never before been found in Now Zealand waters. The unicorn ribbon fish, as far as is known, ia the most complete specimen of a very rare species ever recovered by scientists, and the albacore, it is believed, may prove to be of a type, not hitherto recorded in New Zealand. The raft fish was cast ashore at Whangarci Heads, and is about four inches long, which is believed to be the maximum size. It is one of a deepsea species sometimes cast tip on Australian beaches, where it is always considered a rarity. Its appearance in New Zealand waters constitutes something entirely new in the- records of the .Dominion's fish fauna.
