LEAVING CERTIFICATE
APPROVAL EXPRESSED
In. several of the reports' presented this week at prize-giving ceremonies by principals of secondary schools reference has been made to the announcement of the Education Department's intention to make provision next year for the issue of a school leaving certificate for, post-primary school pupils. In genera], satisfaction is expressed that this provision is to be made. For instance, Miss A. M. Batham, principal Of Wellington East Girls' College, referring to the matter, made, the following comment: '!We know how few actually matriculate and take a course at the University, and we are glad to know that some school leaving certificate ■ is; being considered which will take the place of matriculation and. which will/be of as much, if not of more, value to an employer. Some of the time' spent on work required for this University examination might more profitably be spent on other subjects more useful in after life, and.more congenial, to the girls. With a school leaving certificate and a good recommendation from tho headmistress a girl should be well qualified to take up almost any position in office Or profession. I hope in the future that girls will make use of this opportunity to bo given theni."
