FIREMEN'S QUALIFICATIONS

"1 am pleased to stuLo that lireboards .in the various centres, of ,New Zealand are showing some tangible recognition of the work of the institute by granting an increase in, pay to- associates and graduates," said Superintendent Charles C. Warner; of Christchurch, iv his .presidential, address to the Institution of Fire Engineers, whose annual conference concluded yesterday. The subject was enlarged upon by the secretary, Station-Officer L. V. C. Gibson (Wellington) who, 'in his report said: "I venture the hope that the other brigades ,will in course of time follow this lead,' and so' offer an incentive' to their members to qualify and so better themselves in the knowledge so essential to the sciences^ of fire prevention, protection and extinction. The claim might 'possibly be advanced that a candidate would, in time, reap his own reward by advancement and so not bo entitled to any monetary reward, but it must be remembered that in such a small Dominion as ours this reward cannot possibly attend even the majority of candidates success, and I feel sure that .were all brigades to adopt the principles of showing- recognition, much good would result which ultimately is to the benefit of the com- ; miuuty; as- a whole," . _„
