NEW JUDGE

APPOINTMENT URGED

REFERENCE IN HOUSE

The necessity for filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court Bench caused by the retirement. of Mr. Justice Adams was stressed by Mr. F. W. Schramm (Labour, Auckland East) in the House of this morning.

Mr. Schramm said that there had been unnecessary and undue delay in making an appointment. Questions had been asked in the House previously, and the Law Society had made representations pointing out that delay was occurring in having cases decided. Surely Cabinet was able to come to some decision. The delay gave rise to a suggestion that there was something behind the whole matter. In England and other countries appointments were made immediately vacancies occurred, and litigants were assured of having their cases dealt with without delay. It was imperative, in the interests of the public, that the vacancy should be filled and, as there were good men offering, an appointment should be made immediately.
