DEFEAT OF TAMMANY
NEW YORK CITY ELECTION
VIOLENCE REPORTED
NEW YOKE, November 7.
Two hours after the polls had closed, in tho bitterly fought New York City election, Tammany conceded the defeat of its Mayoral candidate, jlr. J. P. O'Brien. Preliminary returns at that time indicated that Mr. La Guardia would be elected with about a 150,000 plurality. ' Mr. Joseph McKee, the Independent candidate, was running second. Numerous other offices are. still in doubt. Political observers regard Mr. La Gnardia's victory over Mr. McKee, who claimed the support of the Roosevelt Administration, as something of a loss • of prestige to the President. On the1 other hand, the Eepublican machine at j Philadelphia was defeated by a Demo- j cratie-Progressive-Republican coalition. Republican and Democratic gains and losses elsewhere are about equal. Although ( no features of the Roosevelt recovery programme were directly contested, /the President's known desire for increased public ownership and distribution of electricity received something of a jolt, when of seven cities voting to acquire municipal power plants, six rejected the proposal in (favour of private ownership.
New York counted cracked heads by the score after the turbulent Mayoral cleetiou, but Kentucky, with si£ deaths, was the bloody spot on the United States ballot map today.
Guns in hands, quick-tempered voters slew five men around balloting stations in that State. Another was stabbed in .'in election argument.
Eighty-five arrests were made in New York as a force 6i more than 18,000 police sought to maintain order.
"Blackjacks" were used on one occasion, in which several people were beaten into unconsciousness.
