CATHEDRA! BELLS
RUNG BY ENGLISHWOMAN
When the Christchureh Cathedral bells rang out the other evening there was among the ringers one of tho loading English women bell-ringers, Sister Kathleen Jutson, of the Church Army (states "The Press"). Sister Jutsou has rung many famous peals, including tho so of York Minster, Lincoln, Hereford, and Peterborough Cathedrals, and Selby and Croyland Abbeys. She has also rung tho record peal for a woman in England of 9380 changes. This feat required 6 hours and 20 minutes to complete, and was achieved at West Deeping Parish Church, Lincolnshire.
Sister Jutsou said she thought the Christchureh Cathedral bells rang very well. They were easier to ring than many, since tho ropes were comparatively short, so that the ringer had a good control over tho bells. One set of chimes she had rung, that at Croyland Abbey, had ropes 90ft long. The elasticity of so long a rope made it much harder to control the bells accurately, as well as making it much more strenuous work to ring them.
"Not only do the bolls go well in Cliristchurch," added Sister Jutson, "but also the ringers do remarkably well. I have rung with hundreds of ringers at Home, so I ought to know."
