MOUNT BOA'S STOCK

SENSATIONAL WINTER CUP

Unlucky Mount Boa had his day at last in the Winter Cup, but it was a very-un-expected win with the public, and he returned a. win dividend oi ove rtwo-thirds 6£ a century, as well as nearly double figures on the place machine. He is an a"cd spn of Balboa owned, by Mrs. K. Fleming, and recently he had a turn at hurdling, but ,he was accepted for_the . Winter Cup in preference to the lnal Hurdles because of one or two good track gallops, thus being given what was said to be his last chance on the flat And how he has now redeemed lnmsell! Mount Boa went his usual style of race, with quick moves in the running and a very brilliant finishing run down the outside. He was near the back early, but on the turn had gone up to eighth place behind Playground, Chief Light, Silver Ring, Foreign Queen, Cottesmore, Martian Chief, and Beacon Eire. He must have lost ground again before they reached the straight, for he was some way back, but ncaricg the distance he came on once again, brilliantly along the outside of the field, with Polydora in hot pursuit, and the pail' cut down the leaders m sensational. fashion.1 Mount Boa was seriously pressed by Polydora, but he stuck on resolutely to the end, and finally triumphed by- a head. . Polydora again put m a phenomenal finishing run-. • She was early one of the last horses, .and she. was .a long way back at the straight entrance, almost hopelessly in the rear, but once she was in lino for home she came with a terrific burst of speed that only the unexpected grit of the-winner was able to deny from gaining the fruits of victory. Polydora is indeed all that reports have made her out to be, and she will win big races yet. Martian Chief, two lengths away third, was at the head of the others. He was always handily placed, and he stuck on solidly over the last furlong, ' without showing any of the brilliance of the pair who beat him. Shatter, Foreign Queen, and Cottesmore were right up next Shatter came from some way behind' in the straight and should win when the distance is not above a mile. Foreign Queen had every chance after beginning better than anything and settling down on the fence about fourth, but she was finally, not quite up to the task even of filling a place. , Cottesmore went an excellent race and looked an extremely likely prospect at the falee rail, but, like Foreign Queen, he had to yield to better horses. Of the others the nearest at the end were Merry Pee], Drum Fire, Beacon Fire, Cylinder, and Palantua. Merry Peel put jn a likely move along the fence just after landing in the straight, but could not sustain it. Drum Fire was running on well, but Beacon Fire, after racing up to position early, did not improve over the closing part. Palantua showed up prominently for a stage on the _ turn. Cylinder appeared behind Shatter in the straight, but when the task of getting to the leaders was obviously hopeless he was not unduly knocked about in futile effort. Others prominent in the running at various points were Playground, Chief Light, Silver Ring, and Cranford. The first pair failed to see the distance out. Silver Ring's prominence was oE temporary duration only, but in those moments he gave a touch of his former brilliance. Cranford, not beginning too well from No. 1 position, could not get up on terms with the leaders early, and he was Inter on crowded out of it, . , - ..
