RED BANK'S GOOD CHANCE

i One horse with whom the ■ C.J.C. handieupper undoubtedly appears to have taken a decided risk is Red Bank in nest Tuesday's Enfield Steeplechase. He is very fast and a fairly reliable jumper, and if he gets round the two miles o£ the stiff Rftcarton country he 'may be still out m front under his 10.9 when the race is all over. When last Luna Lux and Red Bank met, in the Park Steeples at Napier Park at the end of June, they had the same weight, 11.5. Limn Lux, of course, won, but it was the first time during the winter that Red Bank had failed to finish in the money in a' steeplechase. Changed tactics of trying to hold him in restraint early-wore tried in that race, but the gelding did not like it,-and he had beaten himself before two of the 2% miles were traversed. Still, he continued on and jumped the course. That was Red Bank's most recent start, and Lima. Lux has raced once since to be 'beaten into second place in the Wellington Steeples. Now Luna Lux has been placed on 11.2 in the National, and Red Bank only on 10.9 in the minor crosscountry affair. What a change from, their even weights at Napier P^rk! Going back just prior to that race at the Park, Luna Lux was awarded 10.4 and Red Bank 11-0 in the Hivwke's Bay Steeples (2% miles). They were together at the last fence (though Luna Lux was all over a winner at the stage), where Red Bank fell, but was afterwards remounted for third money. On the, first day of the Hawke's Bay Meeting" Red Bank, -carrying 10.4, easily won the June Steeples, about 2% miles, from Aecrvate (10.7), and that after meeting serious interference early when the riderless Adveutus bolted off the course. Luna Lux was an.acceptor with 10.3, but he was not started, and he was rather lucky to be ranged at 91b better terms against Red Bank in the more important race the second day. .In his start previous to the Hawke's Bay Meeting Red Bank won the Wanganui Steeples (2% miles) under 9.(3, beating Birkbeck (10.10) and Jen (9.2). He had failed in the Century Hurdles on the first day, but'in two prior during the term he ran second in the first day's hurdles and won the second day's hurdles at the Hawke's Bay Autumn Meeting. His record for the winter is thus seven starts for three wins, a second, and a third. He is a low but clever and accurate jumper, and although he tears into his fences he seems always to have them measured well.' The two miles at Riccarton should play right into his hands, for he is not too sound in the wind, and one will be surprised if he is not out in front most if not all of the way.
