SOCIAL PROGRESS

FOR WELFARE OF WOMEN

THIS YEAR'S CAMPAIGNS

"We are sometimes challenged.as a movement because we cannot point to 'many definite achievements, but we believe that if we can assist women to contribute to the true and permanent welfare of. the."country in this time of reconstruction we will have justified our existence," states the annual report of the Women's Social Progress Movement, to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday. "The world. is depending on its women to step forth, and say that certain .things ? shall not be,' but it is a staggering thought that, either because we have let faith burn, low in our nearts, or because we are so unskilful in our work, our accomplishments fall far s,hort of, our ideals. "We believe we have made a definite contribution towards educating our •members by the scientific teaching of temperance," continues the report, which adds: "Among many other socialand economic questions considered were the following:—Methylated spirits, women patrols, Sunday cinemas, cinemas and posters,- and the conditions of Maori women workers in market gar> dens and woolsheds. •■•'-. * "The president, officers, and committee desire to thank very warmly our many hostesses" for their kindness in ■ lending their homes for meetings and social' gatherings. Thanks are also extended to the Press for the generous publicity given to speakers and their addresses. Also to conveners and secretaries of branches who' have endeavoured in every way to further tha work of our movement in their districts. . . "We are greatly indebted to tlis following speakers whose inspiring messages have stimulated in us the desire to make our contribution to social pro* gress something worth while:—Mrs. G. Hunter, Mrs. Wallis, Mrs. Suckling, Mrs. Braddon, Mrs. Mazengarb, Mrs. A. Gillies,. Mrs. G. L. Stewart, Mrs. H. D. Bennett, Mrs. J. C. Andersen, Miss Dora West,- Miss M. McLean,: Miss Andri Bevin, Miss Nelle Scanlan, Miss Mary Eichmond, Canon P. James, the Eev. J. E. Blanchard, and Mr, J; M. Murray. ■ . "In concluding our report we make an appeal for your wholehearted cooperation, in the year's work which is rjefore us. The 'call is for women who will 'face social problems and enter upon a crusade for an economic orderwhich values' personality more than, money, and counts public ■■.service ;»■ higher aim than private profits.'
