RISE-IN HIDES PRICES.
Mr. W. E. Hooper, president of the Victorian Master Tanners' Association, states that during the past three months world's prices for hides and skins have advanced to such an extent that it represents one of the most remarkable increases known in the history of the leather industry. "About three months ago," Mr. Hooper continued, "America led the way, but it was felt by quite a number that the increases would not be maintained. On. the contrary, increased prices have continued, and the latest American trade journals show that from April 15 to June 10 American hide prices have increased by 100 per cent, and calf skins by 150 per cent. New Zealand hides have increased 32 per cent. Australian calf skins over the same period have shown an increase of 25 per cent., while New Zealand calf skins have increased by 50 per cent. Aus. tralian sheep pelts during this period have increased by 62 per cent., and New Zealand pelts by 133 per: cent.
