OBITUARY
MR. DUNCAN CAMPBELL
; Mr, Duncan Campbell, an old resident of Wellington, died at his residence, 99 Constable Street,. yesterday, in his' eighty-ninth year.. Ho was born in' Edinburgh, and-at an. early age came with his parents to Victoria. He first came to New Zealand.in 1864, taking part in the gold rush to Central Otago. Ho. Was successful in his search, and returned to Victoria in a few years. , In 1868 he again eanie to New Zealand,' attracted by the discovery of gold in Marlb'orough, and also again visited Central Otago, and, later, with his mates,-walked from there through Cautorbury' over the Southern Alps into WcstlawL. In .those, early days this was. a .difficult and dangerous undertaking, i " ■ • , la 1881 he settled in Wellington, and for a number of years was; associated -with different engineering firms in the'eity. • For the past, thirty-five years he has been a land agent in Wellington ~ South. For seventeen. years he was a member of the Wellington Hospital Board, and for some years was chairman of ,the social welfare committee. ,' He was one of the oldest members of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows. He was a foundation, member of the Wellington South Chnrch of Christ, of which he was the first treasurer. For thirty-five years he has been an elder of the church, and he was the senior, elder of the Church in New Zealand. He was highly respected by the people of Newtown, and was noted for his consistent life and his willingness to serve the community. He leaves a widow. , ■
