WEATHER DELAYS SHIPPING

A number of coastal and overseas vessels., throughout New Zealand have boon delayed by the recent heavy rains. Among the vessels held up in Wellington are the Zealandle, which now leaves tomorrow: morning for Lyttelton, and the Japanese niotor-ship Brisbane Maru, which is now expected to leave here on Monday morning for Auckland to complete, discharge. These two vessels and the Union Company's passenger liner Monowai aro the only overseas ships in port at the present., time, and the Monowai is temporarily out of commission. The Matakana .was delayed by rain at New Plymouth yesterday, and her departure for TCanganui was held back ■until today. Among the coastal shipping in Wellington that is affected by the weather aro the Opihi, the Poolta, and the AVaipiata, all of which were to have sailed yesterday. The auxiliary scow Talisman, which, was to have left for Nelson, has also been hold back. The auxiliary schooner Huanui, which was obliged to put back into Worser Bay yesterday ' after sailing for Wcstport, had not left Wellington up till noon. There was a possibility that sho would sail some timo later today. . There' were only three departures from ■Wellington yesterday, those being the ferry steamers, Tamahine, Kaitoa,' and Itaugatira. Excluding the ferries, seven vessels arrived in port yesterday, find up to noon today three had come into Wellington. A further remand until August 11 was granted at tho Magistrate's Court today in the case of Albert James Birehfield, aged 28, who was charged •with obtaining £70s9d front the Public Works Department at Waitaki by false pretences.
