WAS IT SHOT DOWN?
LITHUANICA AEROPLANE
MISTAKE BY GERMAN GUARDS
PAKIS, July 26,
The Strasbourg newspaper "Dernicrcs Nouvelles" says that it is widely reported that the transatlantic aeroplane Lithuanica was mistaken for a Polish aeroplane, and was shot down by German frontier guards, who reputedly were ordered to fire on an unknown aeroplane crossing the Polish frontier.
The .newspaper adds: "German antiaircraft defences on the Polish frontier are equipped with a chain of concrete machine-gun emplacements."
The wreckage of the aeroplane Lithuanica, which left New York in an attempt to fly to Lithuania, and the bodies ,of the flyers, Messrs. Stephen Darius and Stanley Girenas, were found in a pine forest at Kuhdamm, Pomcrania, 380 miles from Kovno, last week. It was believed that the aviators, in searching for a landing ground in Hlie night, mistook the treetops of a forest for a meadow, and attempted to land. Tho airmen were killed instantaneously. There was only a gallon of petrol loft in the tanks.
