FIRE STATION SITE
PROPOSED RIGHT-OF-WAY
HARBOUR BOARD'S REFUSAL
Tho controversy which has raged round the question of a site for Wellington's new fire station reached the calmer atmosphere of tho Harbour Board last evening, and unanimity was expressed on the recommendation of the wharves and accounts committee that the board should not agree to the granting to the council of a 30-foot right-of-access through the board's land at Te Aiio. The recommendation of the committee was as follows:—
That the Town Clerk be informed, with reference to the suggested offer of a site for a Central Fire Station, (a) that tho board-agree to the two splayings of the street corners of Herd-Chaffers and Cable Streets, provided tho council either purchases the land on an agreed on valuation or accepts a special lease with definite conditions of renewal; (b) that the board docs not agree to .tho-alter-native) proposal to put a 30-foot right-of-access through the board's land at To Aro. '
"I take it that the board is unanimous on this question," said Mr. B. Semple. M.P. "Th.o board refuses to' agree to the proposed right-of-way?" The chairman (Mr. C. M. Turrell) • That is so. ■
Mr. Semple: The public should know* that.'
Mr. P. Fraser, M.J>.: The board, of course, realises its limitations in the matter.

MeGowan:, T&e Fire-Board seems to have squashed it ■ Mr. Eraser: Yes, they appear to navp some opinion on the matter Mr. Turrell said that from what ho knew of tho position the Fire Board would not accept the proposed site. • 1 JrJ Sei"l? le: The Position is that both the Tire Board and tho Government representative, together with the Minister, have objected to the site Mr. Turrell: I'don't think we shall hear any more of it.
Mr. Semple: No, but it is just as well to know; where the board stands. lh6 recommendation was adopted.
