USE OF SOOT
A CHEAP FERTILISER
This is what an English garden authority says about soot:—Try to use more soot in your garden this year. It is the cheapest form of soil fertiliser, plant improver, and pest deterrent youJ can get. . Sprinkled over the soil and forked in around growing plants it will give them a healthy vigour and green freshness which will be a delight to see. Dusted over seedlings when the dew is on them it will keep greenfly and other pests away. A thick circle of it put round precious plants will provent slugs from getting to them. Do not use soot fresh from the chimney, though; it would scorch tender foliage and roots. Expose it to the air, in a dry place, for at least a week before using it.
