THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

CONFERENCE OPENED

The Dominion conference of the New Zealand Women's Institute, the largest and most representative ever hold here,, opened this morning, Miss Amy Kane, of AVelliiigton, .presiding ovcr_2so visiting delegates in addition to many Canterbury representatives. The delegates were welcomed by Mrs. W. Deans, president of the-North Canterbury Federation; Mrs. L. E. Williams, president of- the South Canterbury Federation, Colonel Studholme, and Dr.' Higlit, 'rector of Canterbury College. . ; ■.■.■■;■■■■ Miss Kane, replying, said, that last year 'the attendance was 100 delegates, so today, represented an advance. of 200 per cent. "Let us advance our ideals as we have 'our , numbers and from, this point: go, forward," she said. Applause greeted the heading of a message of greeting from Miss A. E. Jerome Spencer, who is representing, tho New Zealnnd institutes at tho International Conference of Country Women's organisations at Stockholm. Support was promised for a requestby Dr. W. Irving that the conference urge on the Government tho, need for, tho erection of an obstetrical hospital, in Dunedin. Lady Wigram,' on behalf of the Red Cross Society, gave an address concern-; ing tho movement throughout tho world and asked delegates to help the Rod' Cross, the aim being to have a_ branch-, in every town and village. in New Zealand. ■ . . The delegates were later entertained at a civic welcome by the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., who expressed his high admiration, for the great progress of the movement and for, the part played by women in these trying times. RESOLUTIONS DEALT/ < WITH. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £224 13s, compared with a credit at the beginning 4 of the y.car of £84 6s 7d.
