AUSTRALIA V. SOUTH AFRICA CRAWFORD WINS DECISIVE s SINGLES
(Becoived June 14, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Juno 13. In tho Davis Cup quarter-final Australia defeated South Africa by threo matches to two and now meets Japan in the European zone semi-final. In the final singles, Kirby (South Africa) defeated MeGrath (Australia), 6-8, 6-0, 6-4,, 6-2. . > Crawford (Australia) defeated Bobbins (South Africa), 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Kirby led 4-2 in the first set, and MeGrath rallied and won it, but in the second set the South African, who was playing with great dash, bustled MeGrath, forcing, him to make mistakes, and won "-he set in fifteen' minutes. Kirby's severe service, coupled with his beautiful sweeping forehand drives, enabled him to win the next two sets and the match comfortably. This made the score two-all. " Crawford quickly sot Australia's fears at rest, however. He immediately found his touch against Bobbins,1 winning the first sot easily by usiug much undersp'in and forcing his opponent into errors. Bobbins won the first gamo.in'the second set, -but Crawford won. the next twelve games in a row for the match. Bobbins retrieved gallantly, but was unable to take tho offensive. ' Crawford gave'a really masterly display, winning tho match iv only fifty; minutes. Crawford has iiot been defeated 5n ii singles match since he lost to Hughes at Bournemouth a 1 week after his arrival. Ho has now successfully beaten Boussus, Satoli, Cochet, Kirby, and Bobbins without the loss of a set and with the loss of only thirty-nine games. This is a remarkable record, considering the variety of opponents, courts, and conditions.
