CRATER OF VESUVIUS
STREAM OF RED-HOT LAVA
NAPLES, June 3. • The climax to the abnormal activity of the volcano Vesuvius since February was reached today. The face of the erupting cone, which reached the highest level since 1928, split, accompanied1 by a slight earthquake. A stream of red-hot lava four feet wide is pouring out at the rate of nine feet a minute. At present it is confined within the larger crater,. which is threatening to overflow and reach the Valley of Hell and the villages beneath, i Three other craters are emitting smoke and gases.
