SEATOUN V. HUTT
At No. 2 Basin Reserve Seatoun engaged Hutt in the first round of the local Chatham Cup fixtures. The teams were:— „ ~., Seatoun—Parton; Newton, Duflil; Brown, Bedford, J. Salt; Searle, Rolfe, Janes; H. Salt, Garrod. ; Hutt.—Batchelor; Gardner, J. Butland; McDougall, R. Butland, Land; Nicolle, Cross, Holmes; Stobbs, McGrath. Referee—Mr. .N. Brian. Seatoun won the toss, and the opening stages were not inspiring. The first chance came to Hutt when Holmes swung a dangerous ball right along the crossbar. Seatoun halves swung the ball about slickly, but J. Butland broke up a likely attack. Bedford lashed the ball ahead where Janes blocked Batchelor's clear- | ance, and H. Salt struck the timber with a first timer. Another glorious chance fell to Hutt when McGrath parted to Holmes a few yards out, but a weak ef- j fort was easily cleared. During a fine forward movement on Seatoun's part, Searle switched in a perfect centre, and, although Janes beat the backs neatly, his finish was no better than that of his vis-a-vis. After Garrod had missed narrowly from a tussle in front of goal, Holmes' gave Cross an easy chance which was completely missed. A couple of promising centres from McGrath also went astray. At the other- end, Searle continued to send across some tempting balls, and at last Janes slipped one to H. Salt, who opened the scoring with a really good left-footer. From the- re-start, McGrath let Nicolle right through, but this usually reliable shot banged right against the custodian. Half-time arrived with the scores: Seatoun 1; Hutt 0. The second half progressed mainly in ragged fashion, till Seatoun took the aggressive. During a bombardment, the ball came out to H. Salt, who put his side further ahead with a ball that screwed in from the upright. Tor Hutt, Nicolle essayed a few shots which Parton dealt with easily. Play again centred round Batchelor, and Janes got through to add a third goal, which the 'keeper just failed to stop. Nicolle tried hard to reduce the leeway, only to shoot past after fine outfield work. In the closing stages, Stobbs seemed certain to score, but the effort fizzled out. There was no further scoring, and a 'rather tame display ended with the scores Seatoun 3, Hutt 0.
