PETONE AND HOSPITAL DRAW

Thrills in plenty were provided for the big crowd that gathered to see the PetoneHospital contest at Hospital. Petone were leading 1-0 at half-time, but Hospital forced the score to 2-2 in the second half. In the last two minutes oi the game each side scored a penalty goal, making the final score 3-3, and though an extra half-hour was played neither side could notch the deciding goal. A replay will be necessary. The teams were:—' Petone.—McVean; Scott-Brown, Haines; McAuslan, Campbell, Smith; Dunlop, Kiddolls, Leslie, W. Woods, Craig. Hospital.—Ell; Miles, Thompson; J. Woods, Trewick, Briggs, Marshall, Uibb, Jeffrey, Simon, Windley. Aided by the sun in the first half, .Hospital maintained a steady pressure on the Petone goal, and but for ragged forward play would have taken the lead. Jeffrey did score once, but he was off-side. Territorially Petone did not have so much of the game, but their forwards showed good combination which improved as the match progressed. A few minutes before the interval Craig accepted a pass from Leslie and placed a well-timed shot just beyond Ell's reach. Petone 1, Hospital 0. , Play was good in the first half ana better in the second. From the kick-off the Hospital vanguard swept their way up to the Petone goalmouth, where a melee ensued and Jeffrey managed to slip the ball into the net. Petone 1, Hospital 1. Excitement increased when, five minutes later, a neat passing display by W. Woods and Leslie gave Leslie his chance to put Petone in the lead again with a hard cross-shot. Petone 2, Hospital 1. Full time was drawing near when Jeffrey secured the ball well upfield and alona. After a characteristic solo run he beat the only back and sent in a shot that glanced off the post into the net, giving McVean no chance. Petone 2, Hospital 2. Continual attack by the Petone forwards gave Ell some hot work, but lie was safe and the pressure was relieved. Play swung to the Petone end, where Hospital gained a penalty for "hands" Gibb made no mistake with the kick. Hospital 3, Petone 2. There was only a minute till time, but Petone showed that they meant to make full use of it, and m a Wild 'rush for the Hospital goal a whole heap of players slid into the net, taking the ball with, them. The referee disallowed that goal, but gave Petone a penalty, presumably for "hands. Campbell took the kick and Hospital a jubilation subsided as he netted the ball. • Hospital 3, Petone 3. Full time was called at the kick-off. , . . Two more periods of fifteen minutes tach way were played, but although the spectators were expecting great _ things there was comparatively little excitement. Hospital had the advantage all the way, apparently being less tired than Petone, but they could not press their advantage home and the game ended: Hospital 3, Petone 3. , The referee was Mr. G.
