UNIVERSITY'S NARROW

ESCAPE

University narrowly escaped defeat at the Polo Ground when they met Miramar. Play in the first spell was ragged and unspectacular, but towards the end of the second, when Miramar gained the advantage as the result of a field goal and a converted try added within the course of a few minutes, the contest became keenly interesting. Notwithstanding determined attacks by the Miramar forwards University more than held their own, the final score being University 19, Miramar 15. Miramar opened their account in the first minute of the game, Parfitt scoring an unconverted try. After a period of fluctuating play McKonzie scored for University, and converted the try himself. Cook successfully took a penalty kick for- Miramar, nnd at half-time the score was University 8, Miramar 6. University had the better of the game during the early part of the second, spell. .Feltham scored for University. The Miramar forwards, who had been working hard, then opened out, and almost before University had time

to realise what had happened Miramar had taken the lead as the result of a field goal, and a try by Parfitt converted by Cook. University's efforts to score were unsuccessful until a scrum was ordered in front of Miramar's posts. Over-enthusi-asm caught the Miramar forwards, and a free kick was awarded against them for off-side play. McKenzie sent the ball over the cross-bar. A few minutes before the final whistle sounded Dieclericli scored an unconverted try for University. Mr. D. Calcinai was referee.
