Sir.Walter Stringer passed through. Wellington today on his way south. . Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Perry, Feilding, are among' the guests at the Royal Oak Hotel. Mr. G. Hawke, late of the Otago University, has been appointed from ten applicants to the position of bacteriologist at the New Plymouth Hospital rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. F. S. Hodson. Mr. Hawko has had wide experience in bacteriological work in Samoa as well as in, New Zealand. ' A pioneer settler of Taranaki, Mr. Charles Score Sanders, whose name' is prominbntly connected with the history of Ngaere, where he settled in 1881, died at New Plymouth last week at the age of 82 years. He was the originator and the founder of the Ngaere Gardens. Arriving in Nelson in 1855, Mr. Sanders left for Taranaki about 1875 and farmed at Inglewood for some years. Then, in association with his brother, he took up land at Ngaere in 1881, and began the wort of building up the gardens. Gradually he evolved the scheme which was finally completed in 1912, when he disposed of his land and retired to Now.. Plymouth. There he again made a garden that was well known all over the district, and he specialises in rhododendrons and flowering shrub* from many parts of the. world. The death of Mr. Sanders is a distinct loss to this interests of horticulture in the Dominion. He leaves one brother in. New Plymouth and a sister in Christchurch. . Visitors to. Wellington staying at the Empire Hotel include Messrs. E. B. S. Hill, J. Thomson, J..W. Sloan (Auckland'), G. R. Herron (Southland), E. Harding (Woodville), G. H. Ball (New Plymouth), and D. F. W. Maclean (Hawera). Among the guests at the Midland Hotgl are Messrs. G. Reginald Ford, S. Harrowell (Auckland), W. J. H. Coop,and Norman Withel (Christchurch). Mr. and Mrs. J. Dalgety (Hawera), Mr. and Mrs. A. Dickens (Palmerston North), Messrs. J. Eash (Christchurch), and. J.
