MINIATURE RIFLES

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING

R. H. NICHOLL AGAIN

(By "Aperture.") Tlie fourteenth annual Wellington Miniature Rifle Association championship meeting was held on Saturday at tho association range, Winter Show Buildings, Wellington. About 111 competitors came from Chrlstchurch, Xelsoh, Masterton, Feathcrston, Sansou, and nearly every city and suburban club. Mr. W. I. H. llaase (chairman of the executive committee) extended a warm welcome to the competitors. The necessity for the fullest possible co-operation was urged, and this was borne out during the day and helped very materially to make the meeting a success.. Although the A grade matches were based on GO entries, no more than 31 competitors participated, resulting in a reduction of the number and value of the trophies. Tho B and C grades were fully supported. The Wellington championship was won by R. 11. Niclinll with a score of 399 out of 400. He .scorer! 9!) in the first match, and tho possible 100 in each of the other two matches and the final. This Is the sixth occasion he has won the B.S.A. Challenge Cup since it was presented in 1924, first in 1524, Ilien in IMG, 1927, 1929, 1931, and again in !!>:«. He tied with I). Robertson last year, but lost in the shoot-off. E. W. Veitch. of the Lower Hutt Club, a more recent marksman, was runner-up with a score of 395. D. Robertson and W. Philpott also scored 395, but In the shoot-off Veitcli was successful. Veltch's progress in the sport is Tory evident from his Inter-club averages. In 1929 his average was CO.GO over nine shoots (possible 70). In 1930 he averaged 68.22; in 1931, 68.07; and in 1932, 69.00. A'fclioll's averages for the same period are:—l 929, tiS.OO; 1030, G9.33; 1931, G9.13; 1932, 09.71. Mrs. Maltbnd (nee B. Knell) of the "Evening Tost" Clßfc. won the ladies' aggregate with a score of 201 Wit of 300, and holds the Ladies' Championship Cup for twelve months. Last year's Jailles' champion, Mrs. \V. It. Crawford, was runner-up with a score of 290. The winner of the B grade aggregate, R. Skilton, is a young second season Brooklyn Club marksman. He commenced his farcer last year with an inter-club average of G0.4. This year lie has made a brilliant start, auguring well for future performances. His scores in the three matches were 9!), 07, and 9S, total 29-1, only a point below that of the runner-up to the A grade champion. Tho Onslow Club may feel justifiably proud of its C grade competitor, O. K. Jeffs, whoso score of 194 out of 200 won for him the C grade aggregate. 'Another new shot, J. I\ Corder, of the Aotea Club, who was runner-up with a score of 193, also desoxves special mention. With a score of 97 in «■«! of tho two C grade matches he won the first prize In each match.
