SHORT-WEIGHT COAL

Replying to the complaint expressed by a correspondent ("Full Measure") on short-weight coal, "Dealer" writes:—"l would like to ask if the correspondent bought his coal from a reputable dealer or at the door. If he purchased from a dealer lie must have a docket stating the weight. Let me relate an actual experience which came under my notice. A person bought a sack of coal at the door —coal selling at 2s lOd per cwt. She bought it for 2s 9d, was not satisfied with the weight, brought it up to my yard, to be weighed; it weighed 911b making her coal cost in the vicinity of 3s 4d per cwt. . . From a dealer they get 30 pieces of Tata to tho bag, costing 3s 3d per bag.. From the hawker 18 to 20 costing 2s b'd per bag. From the dealer they expect dry wood. I would tell 'Full Measure' he has a remedy, providing he deals with a dealer. If he is not satisfied with 'his weight ring the Weights and Measures Department and complain. The Department's officer will visit him, -weigh his coal; if the weight is correct .the Department will rharge him for its time; if incorrect it will proceed against the dealer."
