DE LUXE THEATRE.

: Tho immense success of "Grand Hotel," the picturisatlon. of Vicki Baum's novel of that name, ha' 3 caused its local season at the De ■Luxe Theatre to be extended for a further week. ' The novel commanded' remarkable sales, ■its popularity being duo to tho skilful characterisation of the guests at a Continental- hotel. To replace tho author's perfect pen-pictures it was.necessary to obtain players in the highest flight of their profession when ]} came to presenting the characters on stage and screen. The stage version had lengthy runs in London and New York, but it was left to the screen to take the acted.story wherever It had been read, and for tho production probably the most oustanding cast that has ever appeared in one picture was assembled. Ihe players! include Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, John and Lionel Barrymore, and Wallace Beery, any one Of whom could head the cast. of. an ordinary picture,.. From the moment the lengthy screening ■commences tho audience is absorbed in the experiences, interwoven in many respects, of the central figures. Intrigue, crlmo, and tragedy all play their part, with dashes of humour, until eventually the brief two days to .which, the story is confined have elapsed and a new set of guests arrive. It is undoubtedly .'a great picture, and is bound to be enjoyed whether the book has been read or not In' addition to nowsrcels there aro L-time songs played on the Wurlitzer organ ;^oP^d»u, Pictures ever .seteenea is:'"State.-Fair," which Is •nomine shortly to the Do Lira Theatre.
