APPLICATIONS INVITED

TECHNICAL COLLEGE BOYS

As reported on Thursday, the Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch Technical Colleges have been invited to send in applications for three apprenticeships in the New Zealand Permanent Air Force. On the last occasion the Department invited applications, there were five vacancies, .three of which were filled by Wellington Technical College boys. It will probably be a fortnight before the new appointees commence their duties. For the first three months of their service they will be at Trciitham Camp. After that they will be stationed at Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch. Applicanta'Tare required to be British subjects between the ages of'l6 and .18 years. They must possess a sixth standard, certificate or equal, preference being given to candidates with elementary technical training in addition. According to the conditions prescribed by the Defence Regulations, they must be physically fit for service in any part of the world. The pay and lodging allowances, which are subject to alteration at any time, arc: On appointment, £70; second year, £85; third year, £100; fourth year, £115. If recommended, an appointee, on the completion of the fourth year of his apprenticeship, may be mustered as an aircraftsman und receive pay rising. from £125 to £175, further increments, depending upon selection for promotion. Lodging allowances are made to those who cannot conveniently reside at home. The boys must contribute to the Superannuation Fund, and wages and lodging allowances are subject to wages tax. On enlistment the apprentices receive a free issue of clothing and uniform. The boys are trained with a view to their becoming fitters, engineers, metal riggers, carpenter riggers, storemen, and photographers. They are not trained to become pilots, and normally the appointment will not lead to higher rank than warrant officer. Applications for appointment have to be accompanied by a recommendation from the principal of the collego and reports from the last three terms, certificates of good character, and the signed permission of parents or guardians to enter upon flying duty if called upon.
