Tho framework and upholstery of two Government railway buses, valued at £2000 each, were- completely destroyed, and more extensive damage to a smaller and less valuable bus done by a lire which also completely gutted a large wood and iron building in which they were housed tonight. Tho outbreak occurred about 10 o'clock, and so far tho origin is uot definitely known, but it is assumed that it was caused by a cigarette butt in ono of tho buses. The last bus in was placed in the garago at 7 o'clock, since when,no one connected with tho bus service entered tho building. The shed was capable of accommodating eight of the buses used on tho Napier and Hastings run, but the threo damaged were the only ones there at the time of the outbreak. Tho two larger buses had been on tho run between Napier and Hastings for the past two years, and were in good condition,- but tho smaller one had been in use a much longer period. So strong a hold did tho flames have when the alarm was • given that it was not possiblo to remove, the buses to safety, and tho brigado, was engaged for 40 minutes before tho firo wa9 quelled. . . . The insurances aro not available.
