APPEAL TO NANKING

Tlio Swedish explorer, Dr. Svcn Hedin, who is now' sixty-eight years of age, is seeking the permission of the Nanking Government to lead a mixed 'Chinese and foreign expedition into Sinkiang to search for Dr. Nils Ambolt, a Swedish scientist, who has been missing in the wilds of Central Asia since November. Six months ago Dr. Ambolt lost his caravan of eighty camels during a terrific snowstorm among the mountains of Northern Tibet and was-forccd to abandon tho results of four years' research in addition to a valuable collection of scientific instruments. He then proceeded on foot towards the Cherchen Oasis, 400 miles northward from Urumchi, and has not since been heard of. A recent Mohammedan rising in SinIdang has increased tho fears for his safety.
