DEPARTURE BY WANGANELLA
:':, The.fifteen, New Zealand' Football Association representatives to play in Australia, and the two managers of the team, Messrs'. H. L. Godber and N. Me Arthur, left today by the Wanganella for Sydney. They expect to reach Sydney, on Monday and to commence play on Saturday week. An informal dinner was given last night to the team by the council of the association. Mr. :F. Campbell, who presided, wished the players success, and paid tribute to the selector,. Mr. B. Salmon. The selection of the team, he said, had been undertaken very carefully and systematically, 4fnd he wished to congratulate Mr. Salmon. "I think he has dona.very wisely in selecting young players," said Mr. Campbell, "and the reason is that it is much more desirable that men with football in front of them should be sent on such-.a'.tour as this. One source of pleasure to the "New Zealand Council is that the team includes so many New Zealanders. • Ten of the fifteen are New Zealand-born." He considered that,the team was well balanced, and he would be very disappointed if they did not meet with 'success. ■■ ■ ■ "■•''■ Tribues were also paid by the chairman to the manager; Mr. Godber, and to the assistant manager, Mr. McArthur. He aske' the players to go away as a team and to obey implicitly the orders of the managers. "It Js the N"?w Zealand team we want to see cover themselves with glory," he said, "and not one individual, and whether you play or not, be loyal to your manager and team." In conclusion ie asked the men to come back and impart some of the experience they gained to their clubs. In replying to the toast, "The New Zealand team,"'Mr. Godber thanked the chairroan and appealed to the players for combination, fitness, obedience, and loyalty. He stated that a masseur was to join the team in Sydney and accompany them on their tour. The tour is to last for about six weeks. The New Zealand representatives are as follows:—Goal: Zuill (Auckland). Fullbacks: Stone (Auckland). Gerrai'd (Auckland), Graham (Buller). Half-backs: Stenhouse (Otngo), Chapman (Otago), Christie (Auckland), Crabbe (South Auckland). Forwards: Barton (Wellington), Ives (Otago), Blackie (Auckland), Baker (Wellington), Kershaw (Wellington), Kay (Auckland), Groves• (Otago). There was a large crowd at the Queen's Wharf , this afternoon to. farewell the team.
