COMMISSION SET UP

PERSONNEL ANNOUNCED

The personnel and order of reference of the Commission which is to inquire into the New Zealand Customs Tariff were announced today by the Minister of Customs (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coates). The Commission appointed is:— Dr. G. Craig, Comptroller of Customs. Professor B. E. Murphy, Professor of Economics, Victoria University, Wellington. Mr. Q. A: Fascoe, Christchurch. Mr. J. B. Gow, Whakatane. The Commission's order of reference is defined as follows: — "To inquire into the Customs Tariff of New Zealand and to recommend for consideration by the Government any alterations therein, having regard to existing trade agreements to which New Zoaland is a party, and particularly to the agreement concluded at Ottawa in 1932 between his Majesty's Governments in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand; to the financial, economic, and industrial conditions in the Dominion; to the reasonable requirements of local industries which are being conducted in: an efficient manner, and are economically justifiable; and to all other relevant considerations." The Commission1 will as soon as possible tissue a statement as to the place at which sittings will be held, the nature -of certain: preliminary informs^ tion which will be required, and the address to which any such information should be sent. . It is intended that the sittings of the. Commission-should be open to the public, but that the Commission should have the right to go into committee when evidence of a confidential nature, such as that relating to costs of production or costs i of importation, is being endered. * Dr. Craig has held the position; of Comptroller of Customs since 1923. He joined the service as a cadet in 1891, took his LL.B. degree in 1910, and his LL.M. in 1915. He took his doctorate in 1928, in which year he had the honour of C.M.G.. conferred upon him. He was a member of the last Tariff- Commission in 1927, and, with the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, was largely instrumental in piloting the revision through the House. Professor Murphy is the senior professor of economics in New Zealand, being appointed professor of economics at Victoria University College in 1920. Prior to that he had been in practice; as a barrister. He is an M.A., and LL,B., and a Bachelor of Commerce. Professor Murphy is the author of "Outlines of Economics." Mr. Gow has been closely connected with the dairying industry in New Zealand for a number of years. He has also taken a prominent part in local body government. Mr. Gow was called to the Legislative Council in 1918, and served there continuously until his retirement last year. • Mr. Pascoe is a well-known Christchurch business man. He is manager of Anderson's, Ltd., a leading Christchurch firm of engineers. Since its inception he has been a 'member'of the Development of Industries Board.
