EXTRA WORK

RELIEF- WORKERS' RIGHTS"

MINISTER EXPLAINS

ißy Telegraph.—Prew Association.) AUCKLAND, May ». Tho announcement that relief worker* will bo allowed to earn amount! varying from 10s to something less tham £1 a week from outside sources, without having the amount of their relief pay or rations reduced, was made by; the Minister of Employment (the Hon. A. Hamilton), when he met a deputation „ representing the Auckland Provincial Unemployed Association. The Minister said that on the question"~of maximum earnings it was dimcult to make definite rules withov.t considering individual cases on .their merits, but the board had adopted a, general rule that if a worker earned 10i a week regularly or a day'a pay of, say, 12s :6d, neither hi» allocation not rations would be cut unless other factors came into it. This would apply to similar earnings made by a wife. It was not the desire of the board to discourage unemployed from leeking - additions to their incomes, said the Minister. If, however, both the husband and wife earned 10s that would mean an extra £1 a week .coming into the home, in which case some deduction would be made in the, relief given. If this were not don© the board would not have as much money to spend'on those who could not make extra money. If both husband and wife managed to earn something casually no notice would bo taken of it even if this happened three weekt running, but if it went on for a month the -position would have to be con* sidcred.
